About us

The aim of Peannairí is to encourage and develop the practice of calligraphy in Ireland. We introduce calligraphy to anybody who is interested through classes and workshops, in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. We organise weekend and one-day workshops on a variety of related skills: gilding, bookbinding, illumination, paper crafts to enhance the calligraphic work. The group welcomes everyone from complete beginners to enthusiasts who want to revive a skill. Peannairi is dedicated to advancing education, participation and qualification in the artform of calligraphy.

Italic hand

Tutor: Noeleen Frain

Classes began on Tuesday, 24^th September, 2024.

This Autumn, building on our Italic classes last Spring, we are going to continue to focus on the Italic hand. These classes are more suitable for improvers who will learn more advanced letter forms, more complex compositions, exploring contrasts of size, weight and colour.
Each student will also be encouraged to undertake a project of their choice, depending on their calligraphic experience.

We are bringing you the great opportunity to get a thorough initiation into probably the most important script in the calligrapher’s armoury. On Saturday 12th of October 2024. Denis Brown, a reputed internationally as a leading figure in Western calligraphy, will lead this workshop.

Medieval Manuscript Painting

We had a very successful and enjoyable two-day workshop with a wonderful illuminator, calligrapher and art historian Barbara Bodziony, learning Medieval Manuscript Painting on 29-30th of March.
