Brief Outline:

This Autumn, we are going to continue to focus on the Italic hand. These classes are suitable for improvers with some practice in any of the calligraphic hands.  Even though we will be using the Italic hand for demonstration purposes, the students may opt to use their preferred script as they learn about layout and colour and by the end of 8 classes over 10 weeks each student should undertake a project of their choice, depending on their calligraphic experience.

Workshop: Roman Capitals with Denis Brown

We had an exceptional opportunity to study Roman Capitals with Denis Brown.

Duration: One-day workshop
Date: Saturday 12th of October 2024.
Time: from 10am to approximately 4pm
Location: Holy Cross Church Parish Centre, Main St, Dundrum, Dublin.
Costs: €50 (for Peannairí members) / €85 (non-members)

The Roman Capitals workshop will give you a thorough initiation into probably the most important script in the calligrapher’s armoury; an indispensable skill that has developed over two millennia and is still central to Western writing, book production and calligraphy.

Denis is reputed internationally as a leading figure in Western calligraphy. Continual development of 32 years to date has followed a full-time education in calligraphy.

A master of the broad pen in both traditional and uniquely individual experimental styles, his media includes calfskin vellum, paper, glass and film.

His works have a unique beauty that is more than skin deep and are occasionally provocative.

Denis has taught at the invitation of calligraphy guilds internationally since he was 20 years old and is known for his clarity of explanation in teaching.

Also aged 20, he was elected as the youngest Fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators, while working on The Great Book of Ireland from his home studio in Dublin.
