Autumn 2024 Calligraphy Classes
Italic hand
Course information:
Duration: 8 classes over 10 weeks
Start: Tuesday, September 24th, 2024
Time: from 7 pm to 8:30 pm
Location: Holy Cross Church Parish Centre, Main Street, Dundrum, D14 K820
Cost: € 100 for Peannairí members and € 135 for non-members (non-members after paying for the class, will become members).

Brief Outline:
This Autumn, we are going to continue to focus on the Italic hand. These classes are suitable for improvers with some practice in any of the calligraphic hands. Even though we will be using the Italic hand for demonstration purposes, the students may opt to use their preferred script as they learn about layout and colour and by the end of 8 classes over 10 weeks each student should undertake a project of their choice, depending on their calligraphic experience.
Tools and materials:
- 3.8mm Pilot Parallel Pen
- Straight pen holder and nibs (holder and Brause nibs available from Peannairí)
- Winsor & Newton Designers Gouache primary colour set
- Inks
- A3 marker pad
- Coloured pencils
- Brushes
If you have already attended classes, you should have most of the above. Any other watercolour paints and Finetec gold etc will be demonstrated over the term.
There are several skills that go towards producing exciting work: the use of decorative designs, colour, and different materials (gouache, watercolour, gilding, preparing the ground, and other ways of enhancing your work). We will look at some of these as they may arise in the course.
- Quick revision of Italic script using the Pilot Parallel Pen. Assessment of skills in chosen hand with feedback, handouts and practice to be completed for homework over the following weeks
- Capital Letters in chosen script. Introduction to decorated capitals.
- Colour using the Winsor and Newton primary colours, small containers with lids or small jars, liquid gum Arabic, water.
- Background techniques, washes, splattering with toothbrush, use of soft pastels etc.
- How to layout a short poem.
- Completion of project of choice
