Brief outline and materials

This Spring we are going to focus on the Uncial Hand. These classes are suitable for both beginners, improvers and more advanced students.
We will begin with a detailed study of each group of letters in the Uncial alphabet using two pencils, before moving to pen and ink.

Tools and materials:

  • 3.8mm Pilot Parallel Pen, straight pen holder and nibs, inks.
  • Winsor & Newton Designers Gouache Primary Colour set.
  • A3 Marker Pad.
  • A metal ruler and 2 HB Pencils.
  • Other watercolour paints, brushes and Fintec gold etc will be demonstrated over the term.

If you have already attended classes, you may already have most of the above.

If you are a beginner, straight pen holders as well as Brause nibs will be available for sale at the classes. Other tools and materials can be obtained from various sources including Evans Art Supplies (Dublin), Cork Art Supplies and Amazon.

Calligraphy Workshops

Experimental Capitals (class is now full)

Format: Two-day workshop, 10am to 4pm
Tutor: Kevin Honan
Dates: Saturday, 25th January and Saturday, 8th February
Venue: Holy Cross Church Parish Centre, Main Street, Dundrum, D14 K820, close to Dundrum Shopping Centre.
There is parking beside the Church Parish Centre and also in the nearby Shopping Centre. There are good transport links, as Dundrum is on the Green Luas line and is served by several bus routes.

In this workshop we will explore capital variations with a variety of tools, looking mainly at two styles, one loosely based on Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s script and the other based on Hermann Kilian capitals.
Participants will gather their work together in a folder for future reference, or, if time permits, in a Japanese stab bound booklet.
