Calligraphy Workshop: Gothic Hands

It can be difficult for busy people to commit to weekly evening classes, especially if you live outside Dublin.  With that in mind, we have now organised a workshop that will take place on three Saturdays over the next few months.

These workshops will run from 10 am to 4 pm at our usual Dundrum venue. 

The dates are:

  • Saturday, February 24th.
  • Saturday, March 23rd.
  • Saturday, April 27th.

Workshop Details:

Teacher: Kevin Honan.  

Duration of the workshop: 10 am to 4 pm.

Subject: The Gothic Script plus skills and techniques to help with enhancement and presentation

The total cost for the three workshops is:  €100 for Peannairi members and €135 for non-members. Non-members paying for the course become members until the end of our subscription year on 31.3.24.

Location: 

Holy Cross Church Parish Centre, Main Street, Dundrum, D14 K820, close to Dundrum Shopping Centre. There is parking beside the Church Parish Centre and also in the nearby Shopping Centre. There are good transport links as Dundrum is on the Green Luas line and is served by several bus routes.

Brief Workshop Outline:

  1. A brief introduction to the Gothic script and its varieties
  2. How to use the tools: the Pilot parallel pen to begin with and the Brause nib to follow.
  3. The structure of the letters and the letter groups. (Exemplars, files, and short videos will be available to guide you through and to help you with the basic skills.
  4. The capitals
  5. On each Saturday, time will be given in the afternoons to other skills to enhance your work: Embossing, Cut-out letters, Paper decoration (simple marbling and dyeing)

Tools and materials:  3.8mm Pilot Parallel Pen,

Straight pen holder and 2.5mm Brause nib. (a few nibs available),

Black ink (Quink or Pelikan) and small brush – Size 2 or 3.

A3 marker pad,

HB pencil, ruler

A craft knife (or scalpel) and cutting board.

Other tools and materials will be suggested as we go on—gouache, embossing tools.

If you are a beginner, it would be good to have the Pilot Parallel Pen (available from Amazon and scribblers.co.uk. but we will be able to lend you one during the class if necessary).
