Ancient Celtic half-uncial script is beautiful, but is rarely appropriate for contemporary use. In cases where a Celtic feel is appropriate, I often use a hybrid form, blending insular characteristics with a more modern roman or italic.

We will look at principles of modernizing ancient forms and practice one of my hybrid Celtic/italic scripts. The hand is appropriate for modern use where a Celtic feel is appropriate.

Tools and Materials: Broad edged calligraphy dip-pens (Brause size 3mm or 4mm particularly suggested in addition to students own preferred brand), ink, gouache paints, palette, mixing brushes, water jar, pencils, ruler, scalpel or scissors, sable watercolour brushes, sizes 000, 0 and 2, layout paper, a sheet or two of better quality paper of your own preferred brand.

Denis has an international reputation as a leading figure in Western calligraphy. He is a master of the broad pen in both traditional and uniquely individual experimental styles.  His media includes calfskin vellum, paper, glass and film. Denis has taught at the invitation of calligraphy guilds internationally since he was 20 years old and is known for his clarity of explanation in teaching.
